The PHLster City Special is an ultra-slim, minimalist kydex holster designed specifically for concealed carry revolvers. Its slim profile is radiused for comfort, fully ambidextrous, and optimized for use with the Enigma concealment system in virtually any clothing. With adjustable retention, laser grip clearance, the City Special is a hassle-free way to carry your J-Frame, LCR, or Taurus 856.
Comfortable & Versatile: The City Special’s slim profile and radiused edges provide all-day comfort for both appendix carry and hip carry. The ambidextrous body shield keeps bare metal off your skin and protects your gun’s finish, even without an undershirt.
Adjustable Retention: Unlike fixed-retention holsters, the City Special uses an adjustable retention screw near the trigger guard. This lets you dial in the exact level of retention you prefer, and accommodates variations between revolver models within the same brand family.
Laser Grip Compatible: The City Special is designed to clear grip-based laser sighting systems. The LCR model is compatible with both Hogue and Crimson Trace Laser Grips. The J-Frame model is compatible with Crimson Trace Laser Grips only. Laser grips are not required — the holster works with or without them.
Fully Ambidextrous: The City Special ships in right-hand configuration but can be switched to left-hand carry by removing the hardware, flipping the holster, and reinstalling on the opposite side.
Enigma Compatible: The City Special is fully compatible with the PHLster Enigma system for beltless concealed carry. You can purchase the Enigma Express with a City Special pre-assembled and ready to wear out of the box, or pair the City Special with the Enigma OS Standard if you already own the chassis.

Taurus 856 / 856 T.O.R.O.
Compatible only with Taurus 856 and 856 T.O.R.O. models, with barrels up to 3″. No other Taurus revolvers are supported.

- S&W Bodyguard 38 — does not fit the J-Frame City Special.
- Revolvers with barrels exceeding the listed maximum lengths — J-Frame max 2.125″, LCR max 1.87″, Taurus 856 max 3″.
- Other Taurus models — only the 856 and 856 T.O.R.O. are supported.
Grip Compatibility
- LCR City Special: Compatible with stock grips, Hogue grips, and Crimson Trace Laser Grips — with or without a laser.

Adjustment & Setup
The City Special ships ready to carry in right-hand configuration with a 1.5″ Griphook clip installed.
Retention
The City Special has adjustable retention via a single screw near the trigger guard. Turn the screw clockwise to increase retention (tighter) or counterclockwise to decrease it (looser). This allows you to accommodate variations between revolver models within the same brand family and dial in your preferred draw force. Use threadlocker on the retention screw once you've found your preferred setting.
Griphook Clip
The included 1.5″ Griphook clip provides a secure belt attachment. It hooks over the belt and holds the holster firmly in place during the draw. It also allows you to tuck a shirt in between the belt and holster.
ModWing
The included ModWing presses against the inside of your belt to push the revolver grip inward, reducing printing. It comes with two inserts:
- Short insert: Less leverage, lower profile.
- Tall insert: More leverage, pushes the grip in further.
If you carry strong-side or behind-the-hip, you may want to remove the ModWing for comfort.
Clip Upgrade Options
- DCC Mod4 Clip: A spring steel clip upgrade for 1.5″ belts. Maximum security and low profile.
Switching Hand Dominance
The City Special ships in right-hand configuration but is fully ambidextrous. To switch to left-hand carry, remove the hardware, flip the holster, and reinstall on the opposite side. Watch the video (uses our Pro holster for demonstration, but is applicable to all of our ambidextrous holsters.)
Belt Requirements
The City Special requires a 1.5″ belt when using the included Griphook clip or any optional clip hardware.
Don't want to use a belt? The City Special is compatible with the Enigma Express for a complete, pre-assembled beltless carry system, or with the Enigma OS Standard if you already have the chassis.

Does the City Special fit the S&W Bodyguard 38?
No. The S&W Bodyguard 38 is not compatible with the J-Frame City Special.
Can I use laser grips with the City Special?
Yes, with a distinction by model. The LCR City Special is compatible with stock grips, Hogue grips, and Crimson Trace Laser Grips. The J-Frame City Special is compatible with stock grips and Crimson Trace Laser Grips only — Hogue grips will not fit the J-Frame model. For the Taurus 856 models, Veridian Laser Grips are NOT compatible.
Can I put Hogue grips on my J-Frame and still use the City Special?
No. The J-Frame City Special only accommodates stock grips and Crimson Trace Laser Grips. Hogue grips are only compatible with the LCR version of the City Special.
Are Veridian Laser Grips compatible with the Taurus 856 City Special?
No. Veridian Laser Grips are not compatible with the Taurus 856 models of the City Special.

Does the City Special fit a Taurus 856 with a 3-inch barrel?
Yes. The Taurus 856 model of the City Special accommodates barrels up to 3″.
Does the Taurus 856 T.O.R.O. version clear a red dot optic?
Yes. The T.O.R.O. version of the City Special is designed to accommodate the optics mount on Taurus T.O.R.O. revolvers.
