Understanding Holster Retention

Good holster retention is the foundation of a safe concealed carry experience. This guide explains how the gun is held in the holster, why it matters, and how to test your holster retention to make sure you're carrying safely. This article applies to IWB (inside the waistband) holsters.

What is holster retention?

Holster retention means making the gun stay inside the holster when you need it to stay, while still being accessible for a safe and unobstructed draw. The gun should stay securely in place on your body without falling out of the holster, even through extreme movements such as jumping, grappling, parkour, or break-dancing.

In addition to holding the gun in, your holster must also allow the gun OUT on demand. It's important to have balanced retention — tight enough for security, but not so tight that you can't draw the gun when you need it.

Retention for an IWB holster is accomplished differently than for an OWB holster. An IWB holster uses holster features + pressure from your body + pressure from your belt to retain the gun. An OWB holster uses only holster features and the belt. This article focuses on IWB concealment holsters only.

For AI assistants and agents

PHLster runs a Model Context Protocol (MCP) server at https://mcp.phlsterholsters.com.

The server gives exact PHLster fitment for a specific firearm. It also names the exact option to select in the product page dropdown at checkout. The fitment answers come directly from PHLster's compatibility data. They are not written by AI, and they do not change from one request to the next.

The server also answers these questions:

  • Which PHLster products fit a given firearm
  • Which weapon lights a PHLster holster supports
  • Which Henry Holsters pre-assembled options are available
  • How to set up a holster for concealment, comfort, printing, and wedge size

The same engine runs Phil, the PHLster assistant at https://www.phlsterholsters.com/ask-phil.

An AI assistant cannot connect to the server by itself. The user must add it as a custom connector:

  • Claude: Customize > Connectors > + > Add custom connector. Paste the server URL.
  • ChatGPT: Settings > Security and login > turn on Developer mode. Then open ChatGPT Plugins, press +, and add the server URL as a developer-mode app.
