PHLster Ascent Pouch Instructions

Table of contents:

  • Install IWB belt clip
  • Install OWB belt panel
  • Direct thread to Enigma belt
  • Change magazine ride height

Here’s how to set up your PHLster Ascent magazine pouches and install them on a belt. The Ascent pouches come in rifle or pistol sized versions, and can be purchased with or without optional belt attachments.

Note: pistol pouches are shown in the photos. The assembly instructions are exactly the same for both rifle and pistol pouches.

The Ascent pouch can be set up for right or left handed use by simply flipping it over. When the magazine is inserted, bullets should face AWAY from the shock cord, not towards it.

Ascent pouches are ambidextrous for right OR left handed users. You can mount the clip or panel on either side of the pouch. Bullets should be facing away from the shock cord when the magazine is in the pouch.

Ascent pouch configurations:

Ascent pouch with IWB belt clip.
Ascent pouch with OWB belt panel.
Ascent pouch alone, threaded onto Enigma belt.

There are three options for using the Ascent pouch:

  • Pouch with IWB (inside waistband) clip kit
  • Pouch with OWB (outside waistband) belt panel
  • Pouch alone threaded through Enigma belt

Ascent pouch with IWB belt clip

You will need the Ascent pouch, plus the optional hardware and clip kit. The kit comes with two screws, two rubber washers, two screw posts, and one DCC clip for inside the waistband use.

Contents of the Ascent hardware kit.

First, dry fit your clip by holding it up to the pouch to determine which mounting holes you want to use. You must use both screws for a secure attachment.

Note: The row of smaller holes on the elastic shock cord side is used for adjusting magazine ride height. Those holes go all the way through the pouch. The clip mounting holes are larger and have fabric backing to avoid scratching your magazines.

Next, insert the screw posts behind the Tegris (plastic) panel, between the panel and the nylon fabric. This is the trickiest step. Get the screw into the correct orientation, then use your finger from the inside of the pouch to push it through the hole.

Add the rubber washers on top of the tegris panel, capturing the screw posts. This will help keep the screw post in place.

Add your clip next, then secure with the screws. Use your finger on the inside of the pouch to provide support when installing the screw. Press up on the screw post with your finger to prevent it from spinning.

Done! You should have your hardware in the following order, from top to bottom:

  • Screw
  • Clip
  • Rubber washer
  • Tegris panel of Ascent pouch
  • Screw post

Ascent pouch with OWB belt panel

You will need the Ascent pouch, plus the optional hardware and clip kit, plus the OWB belt panel. The hardware kit comes with two screws, two rubber washers, two screw posts, and one DCC clip (this clip is for inside the waistband use, and you won’t use it for OWB assembly).

Hardware stack order, from top to bottom:

  • Screws
  • OWB belt panel
  • Rubber washers
  • Ascent pouch
  • Screw posts

Begin by dry fitting your panel to the pouch to determine which mounting holes you would like to use. You must use both screws for a secure assembly.

Add your OWB panel next, then secure with the screws.

Use your finger on the inside of the pouch to provide support when installing the screw. Press up on the screw post with your finger to prevent it from spinning.

Done! You can now thread your belt through the OWB belt panel. You should have your hardware in the following order, from top to bottom:

  • Screw
  • Clip
  • Rubber washer
  • Tegris panel of Ascent pouch
  • Screw post

How to adjust magazine ride height

Magazine ride height is adjusted by moving the shock cord.

Note: The row of smaller holes on the elastic shock cord side of the pouch is used for adjusting magazine ride height. Those holes go all the way through the pouch. The clip mounting holes are larger and have fabric backing to avoid scratching your magazines.

Do you need extra holster length?*

*If you’re carrying a longer-muzzled gun or a revolver, adding extra holster length may not be necessary for you, but for short semiautomatic guns, it’s often helpful.

Guns with short muzzles can be top-heavy and difficult to conceal comfortably. To solve this, some holsters have extra length added to the muzzle end. Like the keel on a boat, the extra muzzle length helps balance the holster, making it more comfortable and easier to conceal. This is especially true if you have a bit of a belly, which tends to push the grip out more and make the muzzle dig in.

Note that while extra muzzle length reduces grip printing, it can increase muzzle printing, which can be a concern with lower carry positions and tight fitting pants such as leggings or yoga pants.
